To see the Europe from the novels of the romantics, one can resort to the imagination, or alternatively, travel to Viscri. A small town in Transylvania, Romania, where the crafts and the activities from the past are jealously guarded. It is so charming in fact, that HRH Prince Charles of Wales became enamoured with the town and bought number 125, an 18th century house, and restored it to promote sustainable tourism..
The restored house was refurbished keeping true to Transylvanian traditions. The furniture is typical of the region, and the hand-woven carpets put on display the skill of local artisans and craftsmen. The old barn, which closes the inner courtyard, has kept the original wooden structure but today houses the kitchens and the restaurant.
Viscri125 is a place we love because it is a window into another age. Besides the exquisite fortified church, one can learn from local artisans who are keeping the old crafts alive, one can trek in the forests just outside town, bake bread, or track the brown bear. Viscri125 organise workshops and activities to share the way of life that they love, and that we love to fantasise about.
